About Bar 1924

A Neighborhood Bar, Nearly a Century in the Making

Exterior of The Hole San Diego, a historic neighborhood bar founded in 1924, in Point Loma

Bar 1924 (formerly The Hole San Diego) first opened its doors in 1924 as The 19th Hole, a quiet stop for Point Loma golfers winding down after a day on the nearby course in Liberty Station. One night, a hard wind tore the “19” from the sign, and the name that remained—The Hole—was adopted without ceremony.

Over time, the bar became known as one of the city’s first openly gay bars—a place that welcomed people without announcement or exception, long before that kind of openness was common or easy. What followed was decades of shared drinks, late encounters, and lives briefly intersecting beneath the same roof, giving the bar its character long before it ever had a reputation.

The room has changed, the city has changed, but the bar has always remained a place for people to gather, unwind, and stay a while.

The Bar Today

Today, Bar 1924 is a cocktail-forward neighborhood bar built for intimate nights and thoughtful conversation. The pace is calmer. The focus is sharper. It’s a space designed for people who value atmosphere, good drinks, and the comfort of something familiar. We’re often described as a quiet alternative to louder downtown rooms—an easy place to settle into when you’re done chasing noise and ready to relax. A place where conversations stretch, the room feels settled, and time loosens its grip. Less about spectacle, more about belonging.

Craft, Discipline and Intention

Our General Managers time at Cowboy Star

Bar 1924 is a neighborhood bar shaped by time, discipline, and quiet intention. Built for relaxed nights that value atmosphere, craft, and human connection, it favors balance over spectacle and consistency over trend.

Behind the bar is experience rooted in serious kitchens, where precision, preparation, and respect for ingredients matter. That background shows up daily in the work itself—fruit cut and pressed fresh, juices made in-house, and syrups and purées prepared by hand. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is outsourced.

Drinks are built clean and repeatable, guided by restraint rather than excess. The room is warm, lived-in, and unforced—a place meant to be returned to, and not forgotten. Bar 1924 isn’t here to announce itself. It’s here to last.
